One of the largest real estate brokerage companies in the country is officially entering the Maine market through a major acquisition that could reshape the region's residential real estate landscape.
Family-owned Howard Hanna Real Estate Services announced it has acquired Portside Real Estate Group, the largest independent brokerage in Maine, marking the company's first expansion into northern New England. The move also gives Howard Hanna an immediate presence in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, significantly extending its footprint across the Northeast.
Portside Real Estate Group, founded in 2012 by Dava Davin, has grown into one of Maine's most recognizable brokerages with more than 225 agents operating from 12 offices across the region. The company generated more than $1.3 billion in sales volume during 2025, establishing itself as the state's largest independent real estate firm. Under the agreement, Portside will retain its existing brand, leadership team, and local operations while gaining access to Howard Hanna's national technology platform, referral network, marketing resources, and agent support programs.
The acquisition represents more than a simple expansion for Howard Hanna. It signals growing confidence in Maine's long-term housing market at a time when the state continues to experience strong buyer demand despite affordability challenges and limited inventory. Rather than building a presence from the ground up, Howard Hanna chose to partner with an established brokerage that already has deep roots in local communities and a dominant market position.
For Maine agents, the partnership could create new opportunities by connecting local buyers and sellers to one of the country's largest privately owned real estate networks. Howard Hanna operates hundreds of offices across multiple states, and that broader referral system may become increasingly valuable as relocation activity continues throughout New England.
The announcement also reflects a broader trend occurring across the real estate industry. As higher operating costs, changing technology, and evolving consumer expectations reshape the business, large brokerages are increasingly pursuing acquisitions of successful regional firms instead of opening new offices independently. These partnerships allow national companies to expand their reach while preserving the local relationships and market knowledge that independent brokerages have built over many years.
For Maine's housing market, the acquisition is another sign that national firms continue to view the state as an attractive long-term investment despite ongoing inventory shortages. Population growth in many coastal communities, sustained interest from out-of-state buyers, and continued demand for primary and second homes have kept Maine firmly on the radar of major real estate companies.
Although homebuyers and sellers are unlikely to notice immediate changes in day-to-day transactions, the acquisition strengthens the resources available to one of Maine's largest brokerages while bringing another national player into the state's increasingly competitive real estate market. As housing demand remains resilient and development activity continues across Maine, the arrival of Howard Hanna underscores growing confidence that the state's real estate sector will remain an important market for years to come.
