My Favorite Day Trips from Manchester, Concord, or Portsmouth

Local escapes that are close, easy, and totally worth it.

Living in New Hampshire means we’re spoiled with the best kind of problem: too many awesome places to visit and not enough weekends to see them all.

Whether you’re based in Manchester, Concord, or over by the Seacoast in Portsmouth, you don’t need to go far to feel like you’ve escaped to somewhere new. These are my go-to day trips—perfect for a last-minute adventure, a solo recharge day, or when you just need to show a visiting friend why NH is that underrated.

Let’s hit the road 🚗

1. The Flume Gorge – Lincoln, NH

🕒 About 1.5 hours from Manchester / Concord

If you haven’t done this yet, it’s a must. The Flume Gorge feels like something straight out of a fantasy novel—towering granite walls, waterfalls, and a wooden boardwalk that winds through a mossy, magical world.

Pro tip: Go early in the morning to beat the crowds and soak in the peaceful vibe. And if you're feeling adventurous, swing by Franconia Notch State Park after for a hike or a swim.

2. Portsmouth to Kittery, Maine

🕒 Just 10 mins from Portsmouth

This one’s practically cheating—but crossing into Maine for an afternoon in Kittery is totally worth it. Think outlet shopping and coastal charm. Grab a lobster roll at Bob’s Clam Hut, then stroll around the Kittery Foreside for cute shops, local beer, and water views.

Bonus: Sunset at Fort Foster = chef’s kiss.

3. Newburyport, MA

🕒 45 mins from Concord / Manchester, 30 from Portsmouth

Just over the border, Newburyport is coastal charm wrapped up in cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and some seriously good seafood. You’ll love wandering along the waterfront, grabbing a coffee at Soufflé or a pastry from Abraham’s, and catching some sun at Plum Island just 10 minutes away.

Perfect mix of relaxing + romantic + just enough to do.

4. The Lakes Region – Meredith or Wolfeboro, NH

🕒 Just over an hour from most cities

Lake life, anyone? Whether it’s a lazy day by the water or cruising around Lake Winnipesaukee, the Lakes Region is pure summer bliss. Meredith is adorable with its cute shops and lakefront dining. Wolfeboro calls itself “the oldest summer resort in America,” and once you walk around town, you’ll get why.

Must-do: Grab an ice cream, hop on the Mount Washington cruise, and just chill.

5. Castle in the Clouds – Moultonborough, NH

🕒 About 1.5 hours from Manchester

Yes, it’s a real castle. And it has some of the best views in the state. The mansion tour is fun, but honestly, the hiking trails and waterfalls on the property are just as magical. You can pack a picnic or grab lunch at the on-site café with panoramic views of the lake and mountains.

Fairytale vibes for real.

6. Dover & Durham, NH

🕒 20–40 mins from Portsmouth / Concord

Dover is super underrated in my opinion. Great restaurants (try Blue Latitudes or Sawbelly), river views, and a cozy downtown with local energy. Pop over to Durham for a quieter, college-town vibe and explore the UNH campus trails or take a walk at Wagon Hill Farm.

Ideal for chill Saturday afternoons when you want something low-key but still special.

7. Canterbury Shaker Village – Canterbury, NH

🕒 25 mins from Concord

Hear me out: it’s not just a museum—it’s a full experience. History, gorgeous grounds, and a deep breath from the busy world. It’s quiet, peaceful, and genuinely fascinating (especially if you love old architecture and craftsmanship). Bring a book, explore the trails, and enjoy the stillness.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need a long vacation to feel refreshed—sometimes, all it takes is a tank of gas, a little curiosity, and a willingness to wander somewhere new.

Living in New Hampshire means you’re always just a short drive away from forests, mountains, beaches, castles, and coastal towns that feel like a whole different world.

And that? That’s something pretty special.
